Setup airport express for airplay only11/11/2023 The Airport Express can bridge or expand your wifi network. This can be beneficial if your wifi is a problem. Sonos sets up a separate "mesh" wifi signal (in late 2014, Sonos added an update to allow you to also use your regular network) that works outside of your main wifi setup. Airplay can be used for video, photos, and for mirroring a computer screen with the AppleTV.Ģ. They also license the use of Airplay to many different companies from inexpensive devices by Phillips to high end products by McIntosh.īelow I am going to list several features of each of these wireless streaming services and how the other compares (NOTE: Be aware that I strongly suggest buying either product from a vendor with a good return policy in case you have problems that you can't resolve):ġ. Apple makes the Apple TV and the Airport Express that both receive an Airplay signal. Airplay is a small part of the Apple ecosystem. All of the Sonos devices are made by Sonos. For example, Sonos makes individual speakers, a sub, and a device that is simply for connecting to a separate DAC/receiver. Sonos and Airplay are used for wireless/wired streaming in many different devices. For those that aren't aware, Sonos and Airplay have many similarities, but there a major differences between the two. Since Sonos new marketing blitz, I have seen a lot of questions related to how Sonos compares to Apple's Airplay. But as I say I don’t have one to check.NOTE: Please make sure you also check out my newer 2010 Mac Mini vs Sonos Connect article. I think you lose out on some minor Airplay 2 features, but not much. I think you can set up an AirPort Express without also configuring it as a Home device. Personally I think that’s really stupid and probably causes all sorts of problems for anyone that lives in an apartment or has close neighbours as they can see your AppleTV and send stuff to it without your permission. I do know that most recent AppleTVs will also advertise themselves by Bluetooth and create an additional private SSID by default which allows anybody physically close to use it for Airplay, even if they don’t have permission to join your main SSID. That doesn’t necessarily mean the same SSID as you might have other WAPs or Ethernet all as part of the same subnet (ie everything in bridge mode). I’m pretty sure an AirPort Express only advertises itself as an Airplay destination over mDNS/Bonjour so in order to use it your Airplay source has to be on the same subnet. I never had much success getting Apple Airport equipment to inter operate with the WDS implementations in other wireless access points. If you set up an AirPort Express to “Extend a network”, it uses WDS to join another SSID and then extend that network so your clients should join the closest/strongest signal.
